Adolescent Therapy

696962281Whatever has brought you here…

Your parents’ divorce…

Bullying…

Relationship difficulties…

Changes in your body (that aren’t mentioned in sex-ed class)…

Or just needing to talk with someone who isn’t a friend, family member, or teacher…

I’m here to help you understand your thoughts and insecurities about your struggles.

The questions flood your mind, and you can’t help but a spiral.

With so much uncertainty, it’s no wonder your grades are slipping or you’re having trouble performing at your sports event.

“What’s going to happen to me?”

“What will my friends think?”

“What will my mom or dad say?”

In therapy, you can explore these questions and more – in a safe, judgment-free space that’s all yours.

This could be one of the scariest things you’ve had to do. How do you pick someone to help your child through arguably the hardest time in their life? You want to be sure they will be respected and heard. I totally get it. I want those same things for your child.

Young teens and older teens are so different. Things change so much over adolescence, so they don’t all get treated the same here. I’ll find what works best for your teen – what makes them most comfortable. They may never make eye contact and just play with a pipe cleaner as we talk. And that’s okay. Or we may end up playing cards… or talking about how a song makes them feel and why.

It’s important to meet them where they are and treat them patiently.

And if you’re a teen…

Finding this page wasn’t necessarily an accident.

You are probably wondering, “What’s it all about? How can someone like her help someone like me?”

Therapy can help support you in ways you might not have imagined. I can talk to you about things you might not feel comfortable discussing with your parents or friends. It’s private and safe.

You want to understand yourself and be understood by others – why you think the way you do and have the emotions you have.

Therapy is the perfect space to figure it all out.

Adolescent Img 3We can go as fast or as slow as needed.

It doesn’t have to be just talking. We can listen to music, explore a movie scene, play games, or color.

We’ll explore why you feel like you can or can’t talk to certain people about certain topics – and how to change or accept that, depending on what you need.

We’ll talk about your coping skills and whether they’re healthy or unhealthy. If unhealthy, we can direct you to a different way of dealing.

We’ll look into your communication style so that you’ll be better at relaying your needs and wants in the future.

You’ll have a chance to assess where your boundaries are and how you feel when they’re crossed. This is important for learning to be heard, understood, and respected.

Here, you can talk about your sense of belonging, exploring why you might feel so out of the loop with others or yourself.

We’ll lay the groundwork for better relationships, both now and in the future, by exploring your values and expectations so that you can feel wanted, accepted, and appreciated.

Finally, we’ll look at what’s behind your negative thinking. A lot of what happens at home or school doesn’t have anything to do with you. You didn’t cause your parents’ fight or divorce, and your hair color or freckles aren’t why that bully won’t leave you alone in English class. Yeah, those things suck, and you can’t change them… but you can learn how to feel less guilty or annoyed by them.

“Adolescents are not monsters. They are just people trying to learn how to make it among adults in the world,
who are probably not so sure themselves.”

– Virginia Satir
